This novel of dramatized history portrays the hardship faced by 19th century immigrants as our young British colony evolves towards Confederation.
It’s 1825 and Chief Archibald McNab has eluded his creditors in Scotland and escaped to Upper Canada where he convinces the government to entrust him with the settlement of a township in what is now Eastern Ontario, 60 kilometres west of Ottawa.
He tells his immigrant Highlanders that he owns the township, and attempts to impose feudalism. The struggle between the settlers and their Chief continues for 16 years. And there’s romance! McNab’s piper has a turbulent relationship with an Irish lass whose independence challenges his beliefs about women and takes his heart on a wild ride!
